[PRODUCT] Kleenex Heads Up

January 5th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Here’s a fun little design detail in a pretty ubiquitous product…the Kleenex box. Notice how the tissue on the left in the image above is slightly yellow in color compared to the white tissue on the right? This happens when you near the last 5-10 tissues at the end of a box. I always appreciate this little indicator from my Kleenex box that I’m about to run out. It’s such a small thing, but it’s a cool detail.

It probably requires them to carry two different shades of tissue, perhaps even the chemical additives to dye the yellow tissues to that particular shade. It may also require some special details in manufacturing to make the tissue color switch happen at high production speeds. All that effort for a feature that doesn’t add anything to their bottom line. Features like this are interesting to me. Not notable…or even advertised. In fact it’s so mundane that I’m not even sure if I would notice if it was gone, but it makes me smile every time I see that it’s still there.

I never noticed this. I always thought the way the box lifted up when trying to pull a tissue out was enough.

i very much enjoy this feature and didn’t notice it until i joined the working world several years ago…not a make or break, but i definitely get annoyed when i don’t have kleenex brand and run out unexpectedly in my fancy kleenex holder in my bathroom.
