[OPPORTUNITY] A Cup Wearing a Cup

February 7th, 2008 · No Comments

This is the first entry in the new OPPORTUNITY category. We’re going to start simple and solve the Cold Fusion problem in a future post. Today we’re talking about wasted materials. Every time I order a cup of tea from Starbucks it comes delivered as you see above. They use a second cup for the sole purpose of holding the tag/string from the tea bag to prevent it from sinking to the bottom of your cup. This is in addition to the fact that they have the lid to accomplish this same task.

With that in mind I’m not even sure if this is a problem that needs solving, but if I were a Starbucks optimization consultant I would put their packaging people on the project of adding a small tab to wrap the string around that would accomplish the same function. This would result in the same functionality with a 90%+ reduction in materials versus the added cup method.
